Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson told the media after today’s practice that the Wolverines have lost another defenseman to a serious injury - but this time, it wasn’t on the ice.
“The worst news - if it can get any worse - is we just lost (junior defenseman) Steven Kampfer to an off-ice incident on Saturday night, ” Berenson said.
Kampfer was injured and hospitalized Saturday night, but the extent of the injury is unknown at this time. Berenson said he couldn’t discuss the injury without his family’s permission because it happened off ice. He said Kampfer will be out of the Michigan lineup for awhile.
Other notable injuries:
- Senior captain and defenseman Mark Mitera could possibly be out for the year with a serious knee injury. He might have surgery on his knee or try to rehab it in hopes of returning by the end of the season. The decision hasn’t been made yet.
- Freshman defenseman Brandon Burlon will be out for at least another week with an ankle injury, according to Berenson. He was seen sporting a black walking cast on Saturday, but was wearing sneakers today (with his ankle wrapped). Berenson said Burlon won’t be skating this week.
